憑借心靈書籍而受到關(guān)注的黑人作家托馬斯·卡特（安東尼·麥凱AnthonyMackie飾）正沉浸在名譽的榮光之中，而就在此時他的哥哥刑滿釋放，此時正因為某事而陷入財務(wù)危機中。懷著不可告人秘密的托馬斯希望多賺些錢打發(fā)他的哥哥，于是主動和之前在簽售會有過一面之緣的安吉爾·桑切斯（福里斯特·惠特克飾）取得聯(lián)系。安吉爾的母親早已去世，但這名潦倒頹廢的男人似乎始終沉浸在莫大的悲傷中無法自拔，他聲稱時常能看到母親的身影，為此恐慌而焦慮。托馬斯按小時收取報酬，采取其所擅長的心靈疏導(dǎo)手段試圖帶安吉爾遠離痛苦，可是情況絲毫不見好轉(zhuǎn)。某天托馬斯登門決定中止治療，無奈形勢早已超過了他的控制范圍…
